The Protocols of the Civilian Transsexual Authority (WIP)

Or, the Glorious and True Story of How Our Transnationalist Homeland was Created

The Protocols is my first completed screenplay. It’s a satirical spy thriller set in an alternate history wherein trans activists acquired nuclear weapons in 1953. Seventy years later, the internationally recognized, semi-sovereign liberal-democratic trans government (the CTA) expands its military and administrative apparatus, and faces internal strife, espionage from the cissexual world governments, and sec/xtarian division. Protagonist Jessica Stern, star caseworker at the Transfeminine Registration Bureau, is tasked with tracking down a rogue transvestite and transfeminist separatist whom she denied admission into the CTA one year prior. The Protocols takes up questions of nationhood, transmisogyny, medical gatekeeping, sexual violence against trans women, transmaculine lesbianism, and gun rights.

70 years after its founding, the Civilian Transsexual Authority continues to stand strong. In a rapidly growing, ever-changing world, transsexuals can feel safe knowing their rights and prerogatives are taken care of by a strong, well-run, and efficient organization with influence across the globe.

Women Bearing Witness (2025)

Made with the South Side Home Movies Project.

This 45-minute documentary project takes up the methodological question of Black trans women in the South Side Home Movies Project’s archive. To this end, oral history is collected from Gloria, a Black trans elder, and her role in the 1980’s Chicago trans scene, her childhood in Cabrini Green, and her reflections on the transvestite/transsexual divide that defined early trans history are represented using repurposed archival footage. This contextualizes a close reading of two short clips extant in the archive, both of people who appear to be trans women of color dancing at a nightclub.

Awaiting publishing to the SSHMP site. This is the home of Women Bearing Witness until then.

As an amateur trans filmmaker, I rely on collaboration with (and advice from) other Chicago-based creatives, especially (trans) musicians and other filmmakers. If that’s you, feel free to connect with me at alicesoprunova@uchicago.edu or on instagram (f.alice.ee).
